    Hello all!

I have looked through a few posts on this subject but in regards to MPEG Streamclip and the ProRess 422 codec I was not able to find what I needed.

When I was ripping some DVD footage for SD broadcast (which was the only footage my client had available, sigh) I ripped it with the option to “DeInterlace Video” and I received the heavily distorted video that you see in the first screen shot. However when I ripped it again I received the thinner distortion lines that I am used to seeing with interlaced video on the progressive monitor.

Now, I am not by any means an expert but I thought you wanted to De-interlace video if you were bringing it into edit from a DVD source? Was I taught wrong? Will a world ending paradox now ensue?

Anyway, if any of you fine people could be so kind as to show me the error of my ways I would be in your debt. Thank you in advance!

Again, just to reiterate I ripped this using MPEGStreamclip using QuickTime Movie with ProRes 422 (HQ), 720×480 unscaled with only Interlaced Scaling & Reinterlace Chroma (or Deinterlace Video) selected and all other settings at default. Regardless of the end QT movie, the heavy distortion followed me into FCP 7.0.2 so I am not sure how to negate this either. 🙁 Anyway, thank you again and I can’t wait to hear how messed up I am. 🙂

If you are going out to tape (judging by post above) don’t de-interlace, there is no gain in doing so, you are throwing away pic info and than re-introducing the interlacing anyway. I don’t know why so many people think de-interlacing is some magic step. Just rip the video as is off the DVD, also there is no reason to use (HQ) standard ProRes is more than fine.

Most of the time, I just rip it to DV50 using the presets in MPEGStreamclip and it looks pretty good when I plonk it next to my other shot footage.

I’ll second keeping the interlacing as well – whatever deinterlacing should be done at the end when you’re doing your output to .MOV etc.
