Hi Noah;

As long as I have been hanging around at the cow questions about ripping DVD’s have elicited nothing but scorn and sometimes rage. I would, however, like to mention that I am a busy DVD author who regularly has to legally rip DVD’s for re-authoring for many major clients. The names of many of these companies who don’t offer access to original footage for creating re-releases is something which has always amazed me.

This may not be normal but it does happen to me a lot and I suspect I am not alone.

I have to agree with Dan on this. There is no indication that this person is trying to disassemble a DVD in an illegal manner. To assume that is kind of ignorant. 50% of my DVD authoring jobs are based around fixing issues with existing masters or pulling content from multiple DVD’s to create a new master altogether. In these cases programs such as DVD Reauthor Pro are quite handy since I do most of my Authoring in Scenarist.

If Rafal had asked “what is the best program to remove copy protection?” then I could see the reason for concern. But reauthoring DVD’s or offering a client the ability to extract content from existing masters is a great service to provide and the pay can sometimes be greater then authoring a DVD from scratch. I have won over many clients that either did not have the original content or they don’t want to go back to the original author because they did such a poor job in the first place.

Well thats my 2 cents anyhow. I think reauthoring should be discussed in great detail on this board because many people have different workflows or know of products that a simple Google search can not yield. I do not think that jumping to the conclusion that anyone who wants to extract content from a DVD is doing so illegally.

I think your question is totally legit. However, some words might throw up some red flags. “Ripping” is the process of removing copy protection from a replicated disc. Even if it’s given to you and owned by one of your clients, it’s still against the law to do this (like it or not). “Demuxing” is something different – separating muxed files from the original VOB. Demuxing and Ripping are 2 different things. I know you never mentioned ripping but just so you know in the future.

I’m not entirely sure what the original question is but using MPEG Stream Clip is the perfect tool.

Big thanks guys. At this moment i know then i use bad topic subject. I know directly from You. I want to learn more about DEMUXING really. I create many authorings for many major clients legally from dvd’s and i still looking for better method and software. Our corporation replicate hundred thousands of discs for whole Europe each week. At first moment i feel like a criminal when i read post from Noah Kadner. Thanks for this information. Greetings.

Thanks for giving me a good thread with which to discuss on several accounts. My opinions:

A- who actually ever admits they want to rip DVDs illegally? Haven’t met a pirate yet who didn’t vehemently deny illegal activities. In fact they always cry wolf and lay the guilt trip out for everyone’s surprisingly accusatory stance. Not saying that this particular guy is lying but who has all day to play 20 questions? Not my job and not the purpose of this forum.

B- Assuming this guy does want legit methods to rip DVDs, by communicating those reasons we enable other folks who are pirating DVDs to read the same threads and rip off legit copyright holders. There’s no such thing as “good ripping” and so not a legit usage for the Cow.

C- It’s a lazy question in the first place. Anyone can find this stuff out in five seconds just via Google. So why should we be google for lazy people? That’s again not the purpose of this board.
