I was given a DVD burned with DVDA 3.0. I no longer have the original files. The complaint is that on both Mac and PC the DVD freezes and gives an “unrecoverable error” message and says the disc may be scratched or dirty. However the totally clean back up copies are behaving the same way. The discs do not freeze at the same place every time, so they can be reinserted and they will start to play again before freezing again.

Has anyone encountered this? Would it be possible to reencode the vob files as mpg2 and ac3 and reburn? I know I will lose some quality, but should this cure the freezing problem.

    Any insights most welcome.

I would try to reburn onto a different brand media.

Gary’s suggestion brings up a good point and that is to stick to known good media.
Taiyo Yuden is generally the brand most recommended.
I’ve been using Verbatims (both silver & printable) and have never had a return or a disc go bad. This brand also gets good reviews.
Lastly, DVD Identifier is an excellent (and free) tool to have. It will tell you who the disc’s real manufacturer is.

I don’t think you need to re-encode. If you can get to the root of the CD in Explorer or My-Computer, just copy the Files to the hard drive and re-burn with different media. Just make sure you keep everything together in the TS folders.

As far as “ripping” the files from the DVD, try Cinematize. It’s a great program and you can recover the files in their current VOB state or even recover them to their original AVI quality, re-edit, encode and burn again.

Yup! I agree with the 2 above answers, it’s probably your media. Another thing you may want to check is the recommended media that your burner suggests. I know some burners, especially the Sonys I had recommended specific media. That also could be a problem.
