DVD player through DV deck to Final Cut?
Anyone know if I can use my Sony DSR 11 deck as a sort of intermediate from a DVD player into my G5? I’m attempting to go RCA from the DVD player to the deck, then firewire from the deck into my computer. The Capture tool tells me the tape is not threaded. Or if I choose non-controllable device it loses communication. I’m wondering if this is at all possible to do and if anyone knows how.
(MPEG Streamclip is not working on this particular DVD)

Just capture your DVD onto DV tape. Your first route will not work.
The other alternative is to rip the DVD with MPEG Streamclip.

FYI, if this is a copyrighted DVD, none of these solutions will work.

I guess the DVD is protected. It won’t work in Streamclip, and the deck stops automatically when I attempt to dub. (I know this is because this is illegal; we will get clearance after my boss is able to see and choose the footage.) Any ideas for ripping a protected DVD? Anyway, thanks for clarifying that my other attempt is not possible.

It is. I can tell my boss that’s the problem and she’ll tell me all her other assistants have been able to do it.
We’ve just installed a Kona LHe, which I have to spend some time figuring out. Is there protection against capturing copyrighted DVDs that way?
