  DVD Playback Aspect Ratio Issue – 16:9 format

  Hi there

  I have created a 16:9 DVD in Adobe Encore. On a computer it plays back correctly, but when tested on a set-top DVD player at home it seems to have the menu in the correct 16:9 widescreen format, but the content has been cut-off on the left and right hand sides. Its as if the DVD player has used a pan & scan technique to zoom it in to a 4:3 ratio. I have been playing the DVD on a 16:9 widescreen Plasma TV though, so by default it should revert to the widescreen letterbox format and play correctly.

  The assets aspect ratio is set to 16:9 (PAL wiescreen), as is the Menu. The only button on the DVD menu is ‘Play’. This works as it should. The asset/video content is 1280 x 720, and thats what I asked Encore to export the DVD content to as well. I assume it has. No issues occured when I hit ‘Build’ to create the DVD.

  Is there a setting in Encore I have missed – perhaps when you transcode the video/asset, which causes this to happen, or is this a settings issue on a set-top DVD player?
