I’m trying to ripe some DVD material (all legit) and the resulting material does not behave consistently. If I set my edit points to what I want, then add to the timeline, I don’t always get what I marked. One I get it to play the way I like, as soon as I export a mov the footage is not as it played in the timeline.

Original footage is 23.98, timeline is 25, ProRes 422HQ, 1920×1080. I have tried all the exporting tricks I can think of. In QT, I took the clip, extracted just what I wanted, video only, 25 fps, ProRes422HQand exported a self-contained mov. Still get the same behavior.

    FCP 6.0.4, OSX 10.4.11, QT 7.5, Dual 2.7 G5, 4GB ram.

[David Eells] “I’m trying to ripe some DVD material (all legit) and the resulting material does not behave consistently.”

    1) What app did you use to rip the DVD and what codec did you rip it to?

    2) Plus, I read your post several times it’s not at all clear. You say the original footage is 23.98 FPS, but you’re editing that on a 25FPS timeline. That’s a problem right there under any circumstance. But, even more important, by “original footage” what are you referring to? Is that a reference to the material you ripped from the DVD? If so, for the record, original footage is typically camera original.

In this case the video was ripped by the AP, and delivered to me as PAL-sized DV. I believe she did not change the frame rate, so it comes to me as 23.98.

    Sorry for the confusion.

It doesn’t sound right. I think the DVD was ripped incorrectly. Typically, a progressive DVD made from a 24fps film source would not yield a 23.98 DV file.

You should get the DVD yourself and use MPEG Streamclip to rip it, and you’ll need to experiment to see what framerate yields the best results for your purpose.

The AP’s not very technical, so I think I may to do that.

    Thanks, David!
