On playback of a one-hour DVD I edited in Vegas 5 and burned in DVD Architect 2, sections toward the end suddenly freeze for a second or so and then continue playing. Sometimes I can see the image break into little square parts before it restores itself. What could be causing that problem? I am playing back on a JVC DVD deck hooked to my TV. I never have problems with rental DVDs on this deck. Note this section was shot under almost no light at all and is heavily doctored using color curves and color corrector filters in repeated doses to lift a very grainy but very visible image. I don’t see how that heavy filtering could effect the final burn but maybe it did.

Rick — it sounds like a bad disc. Try burning to another disc, or another brand.

Bad discs will typcially be fine over the first half, but then the closer to the outer edge you burn, the worse your playback will become.

Thanks, Tim. When I run Nero CD-DVD Speed transfer test, I get only a few small glitches, but that must be the problem. I’ll try some major brand DVDs. These ProData ones worked fine for 5-minute demos, but apparently not good for a full hour.

Correction: the DVD-R I sued is made by PioData, which DigitalFAQ.com rates as: “4th Class Media — Pathetic garbage media, landfill material, about 0-50% success rate.” A bit harsh since I’ve burned many a demo DVD with no problem, but like I said, not long programs.

    Rick,
I’ve used probably 300 or more of the ProDisc DVDs I’ve been getting from CD-DVD-supplies.com (quite cheap) and have never had a problem until just recently. I’ve used these discs for full 2 hour programs lots of times…but I never burn faster than 2X. This last spindle I’ve been using has had probably 10-12 coasters in it…first batch I’ve had probs with. And the glitches have been with 10-15 minutes into the discs. You can physically see flaws in the disc after burning. I just looked them up on the page you stated and they are listed in the 2nd best catagory…right along with Ritek and others. Hopefully I’ve just got a hold of one bad spindle. Makes ya kind of leary though. You might look at a few of your discs that has been freezing up. See if you can see any small dark spots where the disc is burned. Just look at it under some light at different angles, if they are there you’ll see them.

Thanks, Ted. Indeed, yesterday I ordered 100 of the ProDisk disks, the only “bargain” I could find within the top categories of the lists on digitalfaq.com. About one half the price of the best deal for the Taiyo Yuden. I’m sorry to hear your latest batch has some problems and hope those failures were an anomaly….
