    hello,
when i stick a blank dvd in my MacBook Pro it comes up with this message – “This disk cannot be used because it is not recognized”.

i’ve never had this problem before. i’ve not switched blank dvds – i’m using the same ones i’ve always used.

    does anyone have any suggestions?

    thanx!

[christianhayden] “i’ve not switched blank dvds – i’m using the same ones i’ve always used”

    And what brand is that?

In a bundle of discs there is often one or two that are bad.
Douse it do the same thing with another disc?
Do the discs work in another computer?

You ask for suggestions but you do not say what you have tried.

forgive me. i’ve tried several different brands of disk. and they all work fine in other computers. i knew that there are sometimes a couple disks that are duds in the stack, so i tried several throughout the package. no good on my MacBook Pro, but they all work fine on our G5 and our Dell.

i can also play and read commercial disks e.g. movie dvds or music cds. it’s the blank ones that are not recognized.

    thanx.

    also –
i had just installed a new WesternDigital external HD and had configured it for mac….i had a little bit of trouble getting it to work and i might have done something i wasn’t supposed to..

could that have caused the disk drive to go wacky?

well this is a tuffy, it possibly could be software, and it possibly could be hardware.

I would sign up for an appointment for the genius bar at your local apple store.
