  • DVD Creation using the new “Share” function

    Has anyone tried this yet?

I just installed FCS3 yesterday and tried to output using the “Share” menu. I just spent 42 minutes into the output before I stopped it because this is way too long for me.

I have a 33 min timeline and I can output the Quicktime in 10 minutes, open it in DVD Studio Pro and have it encode and create in another 15 minutes.

Has anyone else checked this out?

Yes, we’re really really interested in this new little functionality. Seems very rigid currently. Would be nice if it could tap into any pre-made DVD SP template, and choose what Compressor preset to use. I think it’s stuck on 2-pass 90-min, which may explain the long export time.

Anybody find a way to customize beyond the “Black” and “White” templates FCP has preloaded?

There is an option to add your own background.

Yes it does take a while, but I believe that is because it is working in the background.

One thing to note is at the “Share” window you can setup your job and then click “Send to Compressor”, then customize the settings all you like. Then when you submit, you can continue to use FCP.

Also, you can access any Compressor Setting, Including Custom ones in the little share interface.

I believe the Share DVD, and BlueRay workflow is really for meant for a dalies or proof workflow. Hence the utilitarian look. However, with my testing everything works great (well except making a SD disk from a HD workflow, it looks horrible), even the h264 DVD format.

Yes, you can “Send to Compressor” but the check box to “Create DVD” disappears with any other option besides their preset DVD option. I agree that this is something setup for quick dailies and not something to replace DVD SP. I guess I’m just looking for options to automate my workflow. I do sport events and am pumping out a DVD master after each game. The next game usually starts just seconds after I hit “Burn” on DVD SP. I’m doing the exact same steps each time to make the DVD (export through Compressor, import to DVD SP to my pre-made template, drag the track to make the chapter menu, and then burn).

I’m just wondering why FCP’s new Share function can’t select a template from any that exist in DVD SP? Maybe an update? I’ll suggest it Apple.

I agree that it would be nice to be able to either pull from DSP templates…or at least have some more control over the look.

The DVDs that I make for my biz are simple because it is more about the content than a flashy DVD.

However, it would be nice to have more control!
