Hi guys! I’m a pro, but a customer has asked me about her DVD camcorder, and I confess I haven’t gotten to use a DVD camcorder yet.

My question is this: when you’re wanting to edit footage off a DVD camcorder, do you capture/digitize the footage via firewire/USB2 OR, since it’s on DVD, do you just pop the DVD in the computer and then drag the files into Premiere? (or maybe both are an option? I don’t know!)

Oh–and if you want to drag them off the DVD do you have to finalize the disc first? If you finalize a DVD-RW, you can reuse the disc, right?

    Thanks for your help!
    Andy.

The easiest thing to TRY is copy paste the VOB files from the DVD to your hard drive, change the file extension to .mpg and import them into Premiere. Expect trouble in lots of forms. The disc must be finalized to do this and is no longer reusable.
The surest bet is to play the DVD in the camcorder to an A/D converter or a DV camcorder via composite cables and then capture in Premiere via Firewire.
