DVD Burner??
Hello all,
It’s finally time for me to get a new DVD burner. I’m still using an NEC 1300A from a few years back that burns at an astounding x1/x2, but it just keeps working. The problem now is becoming finding the slower media it requires. I would like to move into a burner that can support the newer “watershield” printable discs or something similar.
Can anyone recommend a good burner brand? I’m not quite ready to drop the cash for a Bluray burner.
Is the Taiyo Yuden “watershield” media the best bet for on-disc printing? Other good options out there?

The Taiyo Yuden watershield is the best..Preferebly the “minus” series for broader compatibility.
Personally two of the best brand of DVD Burners to get is Plextor or

I think you got it backward. You can burn higher speed media at slower speeds but media that’s 1 or 2 x can’t be burned at higher speeds. So if you got the TY Watershield media and it’s rated for say 24x, you can still burn it at 1,2,or 4x. In fact I really never burn DVD media over 4X. I’d try a batch and like Steve says use the -R for better compatibility.
So it if works, why fix it as the old saying goes. Personally I’d wait until the BlueRay pricing comes down.
I have 2 older burners here. A built in HP LightScribe that’s almost 4 years old (on my editing computer) and an external LG burner and both are working just fine for me. Only problems I’ve had over the years with burners are from (sorry to say) Sony, MadMax or whatever that was, and some of the no name brands.

I searched the forum before posting, and I read a post by DSE/SPOT that said the newer DVD-Rs needed to be burned at higher speeds to reduce errors.
I currently use 8x disks burned at a lower speed, but its hard to find ones that have a printable surface. I can find the 16x ones, but there are warnings on the package stating they may mess up older burners. I looked for a firmware update for my burner, but its just too old. -

I didn’t see that post and am going by older suggestions. Maybe it’s true, I’m not sure to be honest then. I can only suggest what’s working for me presently. My media is 16X but I still burn at 4X because I heard it the other way around. If you burn too fast, you’re subject to errors. Maybe Spot will see this and jump in.Like Steve says above stick with the Plextor or Pioneer, but I’d add the HP as well. If it’s that old, then by all means get a new one. My burner is only 3 years old. Only thing that’s improved as far as I know with the HP’s is the LightScribe is a bit faster. But I don’t use the LightScribe cause it takes almost 45 minutes to burn a disk. 😉 It’s totally possible that the newer burners are far more accurate.

Until I read his post, I hadn’t heard that faster could be better either. I’ve been burning disks for delivery to clients at the lowest possible speeds.
