Has anyone ever used the subtitling functions on DVDA? I have some experience with it but would always like to know more. Such as why on a screaming-fast computer does it take so long?

    Anybody?

I’ve subtitled several DVDs using DVDA.
What do you mean by why on a screaming-fast computer does it take so long?

    Mike,

Well I have a Core i7 920, 12 GB of RAM, twin GTX 260’s and an SSD as a system drive, with 6.5 TB of local storage, running Windows 7. It was built for graphics/video. This is more than enough computer. I have been with Vegas/DVDA since version 6.

I have a 2-1/2 hour presentation with 1800 subtitle events for each language. I am importing 18 languages from unicode .sub files (properly formated for DVDA).

The first file is quick enough, but by the time you get to the 10th or 12th file, it’s like 10 minutes or more each. When they are all loaded and I set my subtitle properties (on an English event) and ‘apply formatting to selected tracks’ (all of them) it can take over an hour.

I am aware that one core is doing most of the work and this is a 32 bit app. Maybe I just expect too much. Or maybe I missed that critical setting that you guys know about.

    Thanks for responding Mike,

    Jeff

    Jeff, 1800 subtitles X 18 languages?
No wonder your machine slows down 🙁
I’ve only done a single track of subtitles so I understand why your machine is slowing down.
Out of curiosity, are you saving and then re-starting DVDA between applying the different tracks?
My thinking (and I may be way off base here) is that DVDA is getting overwhelmed if you try and do more than one track in a single session.

    Mike,

Now that would be something to try… I will restart DVDA after adding a track and before applying formatting.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll let you know if this helps or not.

    Mike,

I finished up the last project (with 18 languages) and started another.

On this project the video is 2:48 in length.
There are 11 tracks of 2157 subtitle events for a total of 23,727
The 1st track took 30 seconds to load in last track to 4:05 to load in.
To apply formatting to all 11 tracks took 21 minutes.

It does not seem to matter if I restart DVDA between tasks.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Jeff, thanks for reporting back.
Looks like it was wishful thinking on my part 🙁
