DVD Architect Shrinks File Size
Trying to make a standard DVD and plan to use a dual layer 8.5 gb DVD+R. My render from MS12 Platinum is 5.47gb but after importing into DVDA it shows as 1.7gb and is badly degraded. I had recently made a previous test of a different file in DVDA that was also 5.47gb and clicked the Shrink-to-fit option for it, but now DVDA seems to auto shrink imported video files. How can I keep the original file size within DVDA?

Your first mistake is letting DVDA do the re-encoding of your video. Shrink-to-fit is for people in a hurry and would rather trade speed for quality. Shrink-to-fit is not an option in DVDA – where are you seeing it?
The correct process it to make the MPEG and AC3 files in Vegas using the DVDA template. You adjust the bitrate to get the desired file size. It’s not the fastest process, and you may have to fine-tune your bitrate and encode again because all bitrate calculators only an estimate. When you import the MPEG file into DVDA, ignore the filesize reported by DVDA. It’s notoriously conservative.

When you are preparing a DVD, under the Review Message List click on the Optimise button, which takes you to a screen that allows you to select ‘fit to disc’, which is what I think the OP was referring to.
You are right in that DVDA should not be used to encode the video. That is best done in Vegas with a bit rate calculator.

Thanks for the replies. Nigel has reminded me that it was called Fit to disc (not shrink) and I believe it was a prompt in DVDA, but now it just automatically reduces files imported into new projects – I checked in Preferences but couldn’t find any way to undo the auto shrinking…any clues about this?
I would like to learn about encoding within Vegas and how to make a DVD in DVDA without it re-encoding but am completely ignorant and a bit daunted – in MS 12 at the render stage would I render the video and audio separately selecting the MainConcept MPEG-2 and Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio settings respectively? Or is there an existing tutorial someone could point me to?
