    Hi,
    I am currently working on a HDV project in which I rendered a small portion of in Vegas Pro 8 for viewing in DVD Architect 5.0
    I was looking at my Project Properties in DVD Architect and noticed under Disc Properties that my Video Default is set at the Resolution of 720×480(NTSC).
    I clicked on the down arrow tab to choose a resolution for my HDV and there “was not” a choice given. All it shows is the following;

    720×480(NTSC)
    704×480(NTSC)
    720×576(PAL)
    704×576(PAL)

    I worked & rendered in HDV 1080-60i and set my rendering options in Vegas to the following;
    MainConcept MPEG-2
    Audio: 384 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, Layer 2Video: 29.97 fps, 1440×1080

    The project I’m working on was filmed with my HDV Sony HDR-HC7. I want to make sure that my video is rendered out of DVD Architect to DVD in HD not 720×480. Could someone please point me in the right direction to correct the resolution needed instead of 720×480? Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you, Ray

    You need to set you Disc format to Blu-ray Disc to see the HD resolutions. It sounds like you have it set to DVD. Even though you are using a physical DVD you need to use the Blu-ray formatting in order for it to hold HD media. It will only be playable on a Blu-ray player because DVD players cannot play HD media.

    Thanks John,
    Wow, Does this mean that in order for me to play back HD from my video on DVD is that I should/need to purchase a blue ray disc burner, blue ray player and blue ray disc’s? I was under the impression that HDV could be burned just like a regular SD to dvd, but with better picture quality. Thanks for the heads up, makes me kind of wish that I didn’t purchase the Sony HDR-HC7. I do have the Sony DCR-VX2100, which by the way is a super camera. Again, thanks Ray

    You don’t need a Blu-ray burner or Blu-ray discs, you just need a Blu-ray player. You cannot play HD without a Blu-ray player. As I said, you can burn the Blu-ray formay to DVD media but that doesn’t mean a DVD player will read it. You will still need a Blu-ray player to read the DVD.

    HDV can be burned to a DVD as SD but the resolution will be 720×480 because it must be SD. The picture quality will be better because it came from higher quality source, but it will not be HD quality. You can only get HD quality from burning a Blu-ray formatted disc on Blu-ray media or DVD media.

    Not sure why you are sorry you purchased the HDR-HC7. The HDV quality is far superior to your SD VX2100.

    Hi John,
    Thanks for your great reply. I now understand what the differences are due to how HDV video is exported and formated. I am very happy with my HDV Sony and now that I know that picture quality will still be better overall compared to SD when outputed to dvd makes me feel much better.
    I use my Sony HDR-HC7 quite a bit due to it’s size, but I do like my Sony DCR VX-2100, even though I’ve only used it about a dozen times.
    I have wished after I purchased it that I would have went with an HDV instead, but it seems to be a good camera overall.
    It’s good to know that I can rely on the help of your experience as well as others in this forum. It’s very much appreciated. Again, thanks for your reply. Have a good one, Ray
