Hi, i’m in the process of converting old video tape to DVD using vegas movie studio HD 10 and dvd architect 5. The output files from vegas movie studio is as required in 4.3 pal(.mpg)format. I have created a multi file project in DVD architect with Pal widescreen properties so that the menu screen is displayed at 16.9 format. When running preview in DVD architect the menu is in 16.9 and the video file displays as 4.3, which is what I require. However I’m concerned that DVD architect may attempt to convert the .mpg to 16.9. Rather than go through trail and error and wasting discs does anyone know what menu format and video format will be burnt to the DVD? Thanks Steve.

Trial and error is what DVD-RW’s were created for.

If DVDA wants to re-encode your video FOR ANY REASON – then you did something wrong in Vegas.

If your project properties in DVDA are set to make an SD, then it makes an SD DVD.

Thank you Stephen for your prompt response and I appreciate your feedback. My guess is that as DVD architect provides a preview facility of the project output prior to movie prep and burn and this currently indicates / displays the initial screen menu in 16.9 and then on selecting the movie play button from the menu screen, the movie displays in 4.3. I will burn a DVD+RW and come back with the results. I was just intrigued to see if anyone else had established the outcome. Off to the shops tomorrow for a rewritable disc. Cheers, Steve.

When you encode the MPEG for DVDA, your project properties should be set for the format that you want.

If you used one of Vegas DVDa templates, then DVDa should not have to re-encode your video.

Now because your DVDa project is 16:9 (for your menus and stuff), what you need to do is as follows:

    1. Open your project OPTIMIZE settings. Since your global project setting is 16:9 video, you will need to override your global project setting for all your 4:3 videos. Simply click the VIDEO tab for your 4:3 videos and choose to override your global project setting and select 4:3 aspect ratio.

Also, if your project global bit-rate setting is less than your video bit-rate, DVDa will re-encode. So either increase your project global bit-rate setting or override the global bite-rate setting from the VIDEO tab.

(Alternatively, you can also re-encode your videos from Vegas to use a bit-rate equal-to or lower than your DVDa project global bit-rate setting.)

Thanks John for the feedback. I initially burned the DVDA project unchanged to a DVD+RW disc. Results when played on a HD widescreen TV gave a menu in 16.9 and the 4.3 video stretched to 16.9. So I tried changing the TV playback format to 4.3. The result was as expected the 16.9 menu was compressed to 4.3 and the video was played in 4.3. I will give your advice a whirl and come back to the forum with results sometime after the 12th March. Once again thanks and much appreciate your time. Cheers, Steve.
