DVD Architect 5 – Resulting DVD video “hangs” in one section.
This is a weird one…
I’ve created a DVD with a main movie and extra features, both with regular and commentary audio.
Everything works except ONE section in the extra features video, specifically one point where the video gets choppy then hangs for approximately 10 seconds. This is the case on the ISO created by DVD Architect, or the Prepared files played in VLC player, or a burned DVD on a DVD player, etc.
I tried to do some experimenting, by eliminating all the variables and here’s what I’ve come up with.
The video hangs if:
The video file was compressed using 2-pass and there is 2 audio tracks (doesn’t matter which tracks, as long as there’s more than one)
At first I thought maybe this was a bitrate issue, but I’m well within the limits and this section of video and audio isn’t anything special compared to the 90 other minutes of video/audio. Also, I don’t think VLC player on my computer would care that much about the bitrate.
I’m compressing MPG streams out of vegas using the default bitrates (9,500,000 max, 6,000,000 average), and the audio are 384kbps AC3’s, which should leave headroom. Curiously, the bitrates never change between the 1 and 2 pass settings, yet the 1 pass doesn’t have this hanging problem.
I’ve played the resulting MPG files out of vegas and they play in VLC perfectly fine, as do the audio files. It’s just once they’re combined in this one specific way, the video hangs.
I’m really at a loss… I know I can just use the 1-pass encoded video for this, but using 2-pass has been part of my regular work flow and I don’t want to start modifying random things for random situations that shouldn’t be happening.
Any clue??

I recompressed the video in vegas, this time lowering the maximum bitrate from 9,500,000 to 8,500,00 and now the video works fine. This leads me to believe it was a bitrate issue (although I still think VLC playing it off my harddrive wouldnt’ care if the bitrate exceeded the maximum for a hardware DVD player…).
The overall video bitrate is still 6,000,000 with two audio tracks of 384kbps AC3. This still has the average bitrate of only about 7MBPS (correct my math if I’m wrong). Ah well.. at least it’s solved.
