Hello, and thanks in advance to anyone that can help me. This is my first post so bear with me.

I received a project that now needs to be laid off to D5 for tape to tape color correction while a final sound mix is being put together. The footage is DVCPRO HD 720p60, but the sequence and Vid Rate are at 23.98. I don’t want to lay off to 720p D5 since it will change the FPS (no such thing as 23.98 720p tape format as far as I’m aware) and I need to output an edl for the colorist.

So, will upconverting via FCP from 720p to 1080p to keep 23.98 cause any problems? Is there a better way around this? I also have the option to lay off to HDCAM if that matters.

    thanks again,

    -Ian

[Ian Lamb] “(no such thing as 23.98 720p tape format as far as I’m aware)”

I’m pretty sure you’re right about that. Certainly not in D5, anyway.

This depends more on how you make the cross-conversion. If you have a Kona 3, the conversion will be very clean & done in realtime as you playout to the deck.

If you need to make the conversion in software, it may not be as clean (depends on what software, & how you set it up), plus you have to add the render time.

I used final cut to render out a 1080p uncompressed quicktime, but the edit bay I’m using to lay off to tape has a kona3. So I should use the kona card to convert rather than using the quicktime I created?

    thanks,

Absolutely use the Kona! Look up Walter Biscardi’s posts here & on the Kona forum on cross-converting 720 to 1080. He does this regualrly to deliver shows to networks like the Food Channel, and he can’t praise the quality enough.
