DVCProHD dubs
Hey guys, a little OT here so please forgive me,
I’m trying to figure this one out and it’s not registering in my head right. Basically, why does it cost so much to get DVCProHD footage dubbed or ‘downconverted’ to digibeta – or even just digitized and copied to an HD? I paid $700 last week for 1hr and 15 minutes of footage to get transferred. That seems pretty exorbitant. Am I wrong?
Anyone got a lead on somebody in the valley that can do a digitize or dub for less than $200 per tape?

It costs whatever the market will pay. Locally here in Atlanta it’s around $125 to $250/dub unless you go to one particular, expensive shop where it can cost $400 and up.
We make the DVCPro HD dubs for $40 + tape stock costs.

You’re not going to find any kind of HD transfers cheap anywhere.
The reason they cost so much is that the decks themselves are
uber expensive to own.The cheapest dvcpro-hd deck is around $ 15,000
HDCAM is around $ 60,000 and HDCAM-SR much much more.
Heck even Digibeta decks are still more than DVCPRO-HD and
a 90 minute digibeta dub from my place would run $ 185Even places on Los Angeles that are optimized to do
these kinds of things still charge these amounts. pretty standard.This equipment has to be paid for somehow. If it were cheap
the dubs would be. -
Yeah, I have a digi deck so I’m aware of the costs. Maybe i should just buy a dvcproHD decka and retire off making dubs with it instead of all this annoying creative work I have to do.
Until then, I guess I get the walk-in-off-the-street-and-pull-down-your-pants price.

We find it much cheaper to rent a DVC Pro HD and digitize the footage to a hard drive. As long as its more than one tape we’re ahead on what it would cost to have someone do them.

I’m drawing up a business plan to do this with HDCAM-SR. 🙂
Some days I do make excellent margins on dubs alone.
