  • DVCPROHD Deck problem — NO Video in FCP

Posted by Brian Pitt on February 17, 2011 at 3:49 pm

I rented an AJ-HD1400 because I have some source tapes that I need to digitize. Tapes were shot DVCPROHD 720 30p.

I have the deck hooked up to FCP and all of the Audio/Video settings set up accordingly. When I go to the log and capture window, I see the timecode, but there is no video preview – it just says Preview Disabled and is showing color bars.

If I try logging a clip, it lets me log it, but when I go to batch capture it doesn’t do anything. Same thing if I try capture now…

I usually only deal with DV and HDV when using the log and capture function. Is there something I’m missing with DVCPROHD???

Okay….I think I’m getting close. If I change the Capture/Input to DV NTSC, I now get a signal in Final Cut. But I need this captured as DVCPROHD. This leads me to believe there is a setting in the deck that is downconverting to SD through firewire. I am not familiar with this deck and the rental didn’t come with a user manual. Can anybody help me out?

    Google is my friend: ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/panasonic/drivers/PBTS/manuals/OM_AJ-HD1400.pdf

It does sound like the firewire setting isn’t right – hopefully if you download that manual the information you need will be in there.

I actually just found that manual about 5 minutes before you posted this, but I’m still not having any luck…

It does look a bit of a ‘mare. Looks like you’ve got to set output data format separately from system freq….. remember to unplug the firewire cable each time you make a change, then plug it in again to see if you’ve nailed it. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get there eventually, it’s mainly about being very careful and methodical.

Wow….I’m an idiot. I fixed the problem the first time I tried. I just didn’t turn the deck off and back on. THANK YOU for the suggestion. Everything seems good now. Thanks again!!!

I found the problem. If anyone is having this issue. Go and change option 894 in the menu to HD. They don’t make it too easy to find…. 🙂

“IF” you run into any further issues when capturing, check your tri-level sync settings. That deck’s “freerun” isn’t exactly dependable all the time…
