  • DVCProHD 1080p30-P or Interlaced?

Posted by Matt Campbell on April 27, 2011 at 3:49 pm

I have some footage from an outside vendor. I’ve digitized the P2 cards and got DVCProHD 1080p30 (29.97) files. Here’s my question, when I overwrite a clip into a new sequence and hit yes to match settings, the field dominance is set to none. Isn’t 1080p30 an Interlaced format. Is FCP mis-interpretting the footage? Shouldn’t it be Upper Field first because as I step through, it appears to have interlacing or 3:2 pulldown? Or is None (progressive) correct?

30p It is progressive. Yes fields – None.

You can shoot 1080i_30p or 1080i_24p

    or
    1080i_60i for interlaced.

Thanks Chris. I guess I’m not being clear enough, FCP interprets it as 30p, but when stepping through, it looks like interlaced material. How can I be sure? Is there any way to really tell what type of footage you have?

Sample below as well as screen shot of sequence settings and viewer.

    dvcpro hd 1080p30

I know what you mean. It can be confusing. Look @ what FCP’s browser labels it as.

    29.97 fields = none.

When shooting in 1080i Modes the P clips are in a 1080i Wrapper or 29.97 stream if you will.
    It’s still field dom. none.

Have you viewed it on an ext. video monitor?

yeah, it looks fine on my sony TV. its just confusing viewing it in the canvas and viewer in FCP. I need to keep remembering to not use that as an accurate source and judge by the output from my Intensity card to the TV.

Ok, thanks. 1080p30 or interlaced 29.97 being progressive just seems weird to me.

When I first starting shooting HD I loved the idea of 30p, but not a fan of it anymore.

    I prefer 1080i_60i
    OR
    720p_60P

    Good luck w/the edit!

I actually usually shoot 720p30PN or 720p24PN with out HVX200. I think its 1080 material is garbage. Too much noise.

    word thanks for your help.

    Matt,
You can’t trust how FC interprets Field order on those codecs.
You can see the interlacing in FC if you set the the Canvas at 100%.
The capture you show is clearly Interlaced.

Anyway your best option to see if is Interlaced or Progressive is AE.
Just step on the footage by fields and you will know it.

Is it possible that this was shot at 1080p24 but when FCP digitizing from the P2 card, it shows as 30p. Could the interlacing I’m seeing by pulldown. When I step through I get 3 clean frame and 2 interlaced frames.

When in AE, and I interpret the footage, it too says its progressive. So I guess I should just edit DVCProHD 1080p29.97, field dom NONE.

[Matt Campbell] “When in AE, and I interpret the footage, it too says its progressive”
    Je, je.
But you can neither trust AE interpretation (it has even less clues than FC).

Check your self the footage as Interlaced and drop it in an Interlaced composition.
Then step by fields (.5 increment).
If every time you step there is a change, is Interlced.
If the picture changes every two steps, is Progressive.

thought so. I keep second guessing myself.

step through is a 3 clean frames and 2 non-clean frames. so its a 29.97 progressive clip.

cause when i change it to Upper field, its new frames and 1 duplicate frame.
