DVCPro50 footage stuttering playback
Posted by Phil Muri on July 8, 2006 at 10:08 pmHowdy Cowpokes,
I captured my footage from a DVCPro50 deck via firewire with the DV50 capture preset.
The clips are show as having a 7.0 MB/sec data rate and use the DVCPRO50

No. I turned my external viewing off. The pixelated apperance I am reffering to is in my canvas (& viewer) window.

Turn your external video back ON and watch the video through an external monitor. Viewer and Canvas in FCP are purposely degraded in appearance to help performance. You MUST view your footage on an external monitor to see full quality video.

My external video looks as poor as my canvas / viewer windows

The scenerio you describe is a common misunderstanding when dealing with RT extreme in FCP.
When you change the RT extreme settings you give up image quality in exchange for more “real time” performance.
The fact that the color of the render bars changes is telling you the level of “real time” performance FCP and your CPU are able to deliver.
As Walter explained do not judge image quality via the viewer and canvas windows instead rely on an external NTSC crt monitor.
Read up on RT extreme in the FCP manual to better understand the whole process.
Other issues to consider are the hard drives you are using along with your CPU. A raid will perform faster than a single firewire drive.
You have one of the older G4 so the level of “real time” performance will be less than later dual G4 or G5’s futhermore in comparison to a G5 Quad your Quicksilver G4 would be considered “stone age”

Thanks for your reply.
I realise that my machine is not considered fast and understand that RT capabilities are based on hardware muscle.BUT

July 9, 2006 at 6:43 pmYou can’t have smooth playback at Full Quality in the DVCPro 50 Codec w/o the drives to play them back at full quality. FireWire drives will screw ya in this regard. Use a FW800 drive at a minimum.
