    Hi everyone,

I have recently been introduced to a possible editing job and was curious if anyone could give me some tips. The footage will be shot on DVCPro50 media and will be captured to a mac with FC. Given my schedule, I may need to edit the footage on my own PC running Premier. but I am curious how much time/effort it will take to make this work. I understand the DVCPRO5 codec was licensed to Apple so FC could use it, but what about Adobe? Or what would it take to convert the footage with minimal data loss (say quicktime?) to put on an external hdd for editing on my system? My understanding is that the final output will be compressed for web but of course I would still want to keep the footage compressed as little as possible.

As you can tell I’m a little unfamiliar with the codecs and how different systems work. Am I best off just trying to make my schedule fit to use the Final Cut system?

Thanks for any knowledge you can pass on!

If you have tape record available, then you can easy capture back to the PC later, and that’s certainly recommended in addition to a computer only capture anyway.

You can also capture directly to a laptop using OnLocation with no loss.

Once the footage is wrapped in Quicktime, you’ll likely have to convert back to Animation to use it in Premiere. I would do a test prior, it’s been a while since I had to use that format from the Mac side.

Hi Vince, thanks for your reply. What do you mean by “tape record?” My understanding is that the videographer will be recording to DVCPRO tape and will be later digitized using a deck. On Location would be an option except that there will be both sitting interview footage as well as a lot of b-roll (outdoor, moving, etc) which will make it less ideal.
If it is being digitized using a deck I suppose I may be able to digitize directly to PPro on a laptop- how would the compression work with this? Would there be any advantage to digitizing to FC than to PPro?
Thank you again for your input, it’s really appreciated!
