DVCPRO50 480p to 720p transcode bitrate
I am archiving my P2 DVCPRO50 720×480 30p footage as 1280×720 30p MPEG4 files. I currently am rendering at the highest allowable bitrate in Sony Vegas, 26Mbps.
Given the different compression schemes, what would be the “appropriate” or “recommended” bitrate to render my MPEG4 files for archive that retains the full quality of the original DVCPRO50 footage? To my eye 13Mbps looks as good as 26Mbps on my laptop screen, but I don’t wan’t to skimp on quality.

No need for you to do this. What you need to do is archive the original P2 assets on a hard drive. Upresing is not going to give you better quality.

I shoot P2, which means each “story” I shoot contains a half dozen folders, with dozens of randomly named files. If there were a way to archive as a single AVI file, like with DVCPRO25, this would not be an issue. I just figured since everything I shoot will be aired in HD broadcasts, and I originate 30p, 1280×720 30p archiving and distribution seemed like a great idea. 🙂
And for the record…….the 50 in DVCPRO50 makes the colors POP, very vivid, and the P in 30p gets rid of all those lame interlacing issues most SD footage has…..I am very pleased with the resulting quality.
