DVCPro Tapes, Sony DSR-11 Deck
Posted by Mickey Stroud on April 1, 2008 at 2:23 amCan you capture DVCPro DP121, 66M tapes with a Sony DSR-11 Deck? If not, what decks have to be used?

April 1, 2008 at 3:10 amI don’t think so. DVCPro desks can read MiniDV tapes if you use an adapter. But I haven’t heard of the DV desks reading DVCPro tapes.

April 1, 2008 at 3:20 amThanks, Rafael,
I know that the DSR-11 will capture DV and DVCam tapes but I don’t know how much difference there is between DVCam and DVCPro. -

April 1, 2008 at 7:01 amIn Sony´s DV-Cam deck hierachy from bottom (DSR-11) to top(DSR-2000), somewhere in the middle is Sony DSR-1500. It is the first model to be able to play back DVCPro-tapes. Ofcourse all higher models will do it also. None of them play back DVCPro-50- or DVCPro-HD -tapes

April 1, 2008 at 10:18 amJust to add there is no much difference between DV and DVCPro.
DVCpro had from the beguinning an “scope’ more professional an in fact from the first 90’s was the replacement of the Beta-Cam in many TV stations, mainly for news.
More rugged hardware (really) and better (?) quality tapes than MiniDV, but much more expensive.
Then many TV stations realized that DV could yield the same quality for news than DVCPro, and much cheaper. And SONY made the DVCam, that is more or less the same dog with a different necklace.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

April 1, 2008 at 11:37 amMy understanding is that a DSR-11 can play a DVCPro25 tape analog out only, not firewire. I haven’t tried this first hand but have heard that from others. You’d need to take the analog out and put it into another device to convert to DV or otherwise get it into the computer.

That was my experience, many years ago. I’ve since heard that some people can do this. I suspect that they changed that at some point and that older 1500s can’t play DVCPRO from firewire while newer ones can.
I’ve never seen one that can, but like you, I have heard of them.
