October 22, 2008 at 9:57 pm[Christopher Wright] “I would be very wary of spending all this extra money to output to an HDCAM tape if you are only submitting to a film festival. VERY, VERY few film festivals have the capability of playing back even Blu-Ray disks, much less having HDCAM decks available for festival playback.”
All you have to do is check the specs with the film festival. It’s not like that information is hidden away. Every film festival has a list of what can be submitted to the festival. So while your statement might be a nice generalization, he’s talking about a single film festival and whatever that film festival says, goes.
I recently completed a color grading job for a horror feature and they presented it on HDCAM because the festival had that on the list of acceptable formats.
And BluRay is fast becoming a new delivery option since the players are dropping in price and pretty much anyone can burn their movie to a BluRay disc. In fact that’s what I look for now when submitting because quite honestly I really don’t want to submit a film on Beta or DVD anymore.

October 22, 2008 at 9:59 pmYes Blu-Ray is the way to go for film festivals (and cost!), and most venues should at least be able to get their hands on a blu-ray player a lot easier than an HDCAM deck! I would still ask the film venue specifically what their capabilities are though, regardless.

October 22, 2008 at 10:14 pmActually he said “film festival circuit”, not a single film festival. I have had films shown at over 20 film festivals (from NYC to LA and everywhere in between)over the last 5 years, and not a single one has offered Blu-Ray or HDCAM playback. It is always best to check with the individual festival screeners though, as sometimes they will bring in special projectors, tapedecks, (and hopefully soon, without having to ask!) Blu-ray players, especially if a bunch of their filmmakers specifically ask for it. This year the Santa Fe Film Festival is doing just that. Most of that info is not included in WAB listings, you need to contact the film festival directly. And I can agree with you, seeing true HD on a film screen naturally blows away any SD format. In a perfect world, that is the only format I would want my films shown in as well. However, if you really want to see your film played at several film festivals across the country you rarely have that luxury.
