    Greetings all!

I am looking for a little help on deciding workflow for a project.. Here are some of the details:

    – it is for the Web primarily, but will have some press on TV
    – needs to be 16×9
    – doing most of editing on Macbook Pros
    – has some basic chroma key elements
    – somewhat tight turnarounds

The first go round, we shot on DV anamorphic. It worked OK but the quality for the keying was very shaky, and it didn’t look great for TV press that it got. SO I am looking into what would be a smart uprgrade for the the quality. We shot on the Panasonic HVX 200 cameras to DV tape but now I am considering the P2 work flow (also a big concern) and shooting to either DVC Pro, DVC Pro 50, or DVC Pro HD.

It seems that HD would be a bit overkill, so leaning more towards 50 or just plain DVCPro.

    Here are my concerns:

    – bandwidth/ storage increase for DVC Pro 50… will the laptops be able to handle that?
    – p2 workflow? It still scares me a little..
    – with p2 workflow, best system for backup/ transport for FCP?

Sorry for such a broad topic but any help would be appreciated!

[macfreek] “- bandwidth/ storage increase for DVC Pro 50… will the laptops be able to handle that?”

Laptops aren’t the issue, but yes, they can. I have a Powerbook G4 that can handle it….and I am sure that any of the MacBook Pros can. What you really need is a good hard drive. FW800 two drive Raid, like the G-Raid or Firewire VR. Better yet to get out of the FW realm and get an eSATA drive (and PCIexpress adapter) like the S2VR Duo.

[macfreek] “- p2 workflow? It still scares me a little..”

Been using it for two years now…

BEST? LTO tapes drives. Not cheap, but reliable. But what I do is get bare SATA drives (cheap) and a $15 USB to SATA connector and copy to the drives then put them on a shelf. That will suffice for me until Blu_ray becomes a better option (or HD DVD, when the dust settles on which one survives) or I can afford LTO.

Shoot DVCPRO HD 720p 24PN. GREAT images, very little space required, low data rate. GREAT image.

    Shane –

I have to disagree with you about 720P24 for the web. It’s more than a little bit of overkill. DVCPRO50 anamorphic is fine for this job, the 4:2:2 sampling will make for better keys without going to such high data levels.

Macfreek – there is no visual difference between DV and DVCPRO – they are both 4:1:1 sampled and both make for difficult keying.

Disagreeing is fine. Just offering opinions.

If you are shooting 24p using a p2 workflow, than you really should be shooting 720p vs. dvcpro 50. In addition to the extra pixels you also have a lower bitrate as 720 24pn is just under 6 MB/s while dvcpro50 is about 7.5 MB/s. So you’ll get more time per p2 card. Unless you can shoot native framerates in dvcpro50?? not sure if that’s possible. And imho 72024p compresses beautifully for the web.
