This topic has been addressed many times before, but trolling the threads still hasn’t given me the basic steps I’m looking for, so here we go again…

I’m editing DVCProHD 720p 23.98 and need to create an SD DVD, letterboxed on 4:3 monitors and widescreen on 16:9 monitors.

I’m trying to export from FCP using compressor, but I’m perplexed at the settings, and possibly just too fried from work to catch the simple thing I’m missing. Can someone walkthrough the steps — very basic step by step…consider me an idiot, because at this point that’s what I feel like…

Maybe then the reply to this post can be stickied as a formal workflow bible for this question.

    Thanks.

I believe both Shane Ross and I have laid out some pretty clear directions.

Export from your FCP timeline, don’t change anything.

In Compressor choose the DVD setting of your choice.

In DVDSP, ensure that you are set up for a 16:9 DVD.

When played back on a 4:3 TV, the DVD will play back letterboxed. When played back on a widesreen TV, the DVD will play back 16:9.

That’s all there is to it.

Tis true… it’s been said clearly before. Sometimes there’s no accounting for what it takes to get it through some people’s heads (me.)

Couldn’t get it to work yesterday, but now it does. Thanks for the help. Stand by for the next exercise in repetition.

It isn’t my method…David Roth Weiss came up with it. I just have permission to have it in a stock answer.

#42 – Quick and dirty way to author a DVD

Shane’s Stock Answer #42 – David Roth Weiss’ Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:

The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:

    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.

    2. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.

    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.

    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.

    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.

    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the “general tab” in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select “16:9 pan-scan.”

    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.

    THATS ALL!!!

NOW…if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose “16:9 LETTERBOX” instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

Actually Shane, the down and dirty method produces pretty good looking DVDs. I use the down and dirty technique for anything other than mastering a final DVD.

Sorry if this issue has been beaten into the ground. So I don’t need to change my sequence’s compression settings to “none” before I use compressor? (I’m using the DVCPROHd codec while editing my project).

    No…you don’t.
