Working with footage shot on the Panasonic HDX900 – set to 720 24p mode.. BUT.. when digitizing it seems that a 23.98 setting works best on the Kona.. (We did an online test and imported at 1080 psf 23.98 Pro Res HQ.. everything looked great.)

Initially we set to 24, and downcoverted through the Kona LH to DV Anamorphic at 24 but that yielded clicks and pops in our audio and sync drift which was very noticeable after 5 minutes.

SO.. now, I’d like to know what is the ideal way to do an offline / online workflow for this kind of material?

Should we downconvert in the deck (Panasonic 1400) and come out the SD SDI out for the offline? OR is there some other Kona setting that works in this situation?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Normally the actual frame rate for video is (and should be) 23.98.

Unless you really have an old system and a lot of tape hours, I would work with DVCProHD all the way through the process. If the footage is shot 720p24p I would capture and edit 720p 23.98. Keep it simple and straight forward.

If you do want to use SD to edit with, I would edit DV50 anamorphic 23.98.

Thanks for the suggestion. That’s what AJA recommended too..

We were too far along with the project to recapture everything at DVCPROHD.. but we did try swapping out our Kona LH for a Kona 3 and importing at 525, 23.98 . Unfortunately, the footage came in all strobey. Not sure why?

So I’m still not sure what the best way to do the offline is.. other than keep it all native.

Either way, we’ve done some tests to prep for the online and we should be ok with the recapture.. just may take some extra man power syncing things up and making sure everything looks right.
