  • DVCPRO HD Footage Becomes Jagged When Imported Into After Effects,

Posted by Mike Edge on January 24, 2009 at 5:58 am

I shot 720p footage on a Panasonic HVX-200a at 30fps. The footage looks normal when I review it in Final Cut Pro or while watching it in Quicktime player, but when I import it into After Effects it suddenly becomes very jagged all over and loses detail and sharpness. I exported it from Final Cut Pro using the same settings as it was imported as (DVCPRO HD 720p60). I checked the Separate Fields setting in the Interpret Footage window and it’s set to Off. The composition is set to the DVC Pro 720 29.97 preset. What do I need to do to fix my footage in AE? Thanks in advance.

Have you rendered it back out of AE to see if the jaggies are still there? When you import footage with 1:33 aspect ratio, like 1280×720 DVCPRO HD footage has, AE uses aspect ratio correction in the viewer window so that you can see the footage properly. Without this correction, everything would look squished. The trade off is that it tends to make your footage look jagged within the app, but the output will look just fine.

You can toggle aspect ratio correction on and off using one of the buttons along the bottom of the comp viewer window.

I suspect that you’re seeing pixel aspect correction jaggies as well. You can create a 1280×720 square pixel composition and place your footage in that to check it.

Thanks for your response, Darby. That got rid of all the jaggies. Should I do all the editing/compositing/exporting in the square pixel comp or should I stick with my original?

That was indeed the issue. Thanks Brendan!

That depends on where your footage is headed when you’re done with it in After Effects. Honestly it shouldn’t make a huge difference one way or the other, but I would generally recommend doing your work in the DVCPRO HD native comp (960×720 with 1.33 pixel aspect ratio) and dropping that composition into your 1280×720 square pixel comp for preview purposes.
