  • DVCPRO HD direct capture to FCP question

I plan to capture DVCPRO HD from an HDX900 directly to FCP 5 using capture now with the uncontrollable device setting. I realize that I will not have timecode.

I plan on editing in DVCPRO HD with much exporting to After Effects for keying and other effects and then back to FCP. MY final output will be both HDCAM and DVD.

My question is will the lack of timecode affect my workflow in a negative way? Since I am not doing an offline I think I should be OK.
    Is that correct?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Well…what if your hard drive fails? What if a clip goes offline for another reason? Then you are SOL…you will have to recapture and re-edit from scratch.

Other than that, I see no adverse effects. Each clip will have timecode, but each one will start at 00;00;00;00 and not relate to your tapes. That’s all.

Time code is a HUGE deal…IMHO.

    Shane,

Thanks for making me aware of these issues. Perhaps I could use the capture now function as a monitoring tool while shooting and later capture the tapes with time code.
