DVCPRO HD Compressed?
Posted by Bronek on October 23, 2006 at 3:54 pmWhat is the difference between the DVCPRO HD codec, and the uncompressed codec? Is the picture really compressed? If so, how much? I can’t seem to tell a difference in quality either way using a rather large HD plasma screen.

Yes, DVCPro HD is a compressed format. That’s the nature of it but it’s incredibly clean and holds up well with filters and color correction.
There is zero quality difference in capturing the DVCPro HD material via Firewire or HD-SDI. We’ve worked with the format almost two years now and we use a Firewire workflow.

Let me quantify that statement by saying we have zero quality difference on our Kona 2 and Kona 3 systems. We only work with AJA equipment so in our experience, the quality of DVCPro HD material is identical between Firewire and HD-SDI.
