    Hi guys:

I’m editing firewire-captured DVCPro HD footage from a Varicam for a series I’m working on. I don’t understand the codec thing for After Effects movies. We use a lot of AE in our productions, but we if we use the DVCPro HD codec, we can’t get video with an alpha channel. We can only get either RGB or alpha. So we’ve had to resort to checking “none” in the AE output module, and 1280×720 for the size. This gives us the movie, but then they all have to render. This can take a great deal of time in a one-hour program.

Any suggestions on how to alleviate this issue?

    Nope.

There are no apple codecs which carry an alpha channel except animation.

You will have to render out an animation and then re-render in FCP.

Hopefully this will change some day.

Hey, thanks for the input. That’s what we’re doing. I had hoped there might be some trick I didn’t know about.

Like Dave says, if you have a fast computer with faster drives, and turn on FCPs dynamic rt, you can power through some alpha movies.

The lack of real time alpha movies as been a major gripe in FCP for a looooong time.

Hopefully the kind folks at apple are listening.
