Working on a feature primarily DVCPRO HD 1080p 24, the camera crew is also doing some scenes for various reasons on Panasonic P2 720 24p. I am wondering what the best way to upconvert that footage is. I will have access to a 1200A deck and thought that laying it out to tape via firewire and upconvert it on the way back in would be my best option.

Also, there is some HDV 1080i footage and I’ve read Walter and Graeme’s posting on similar topics. I’m wondering if there are any issues using a Kona LH, analogue out of deck pulling in DVCPRO HD, having 1080i to 1080p.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Why are they shooting 720p24 with the HVX? to conserve space? If they haven’t shot yet, try to convince them to shoot 1080p. I hate the “fix it in post” attitude. Less time on their end is more time in ours.

That being said, you can upconvert by using Compressor, or string out the footage on a 1080p timeline, render, then output a self contained Quicktime Movie, reimport that and use that as your source footage.

As for the LH and upconverting HDV…This is what Walter is doing…and what Jerry Hofmann wrote about in his HDV article in the most recent Cow Magazine. It is the way to go. I myself would LOVE to test it, but I don’t know of anyone who owns an HDV camera AND deck for me to test. All the people I know own cameras. And I am too cheap to rent a deck on my own dime just to see what I can do.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes they already shot, and they choose to shoot 720 to conserve space. I’ll probably go the compressor route since I have several G5 stations to process with.

As far as the HDV workflow I thought that is what Walter was doing but wanted conformation, a little piece of mind goes along way. I’ll check out Jerry Hoffman’s article too.

    Thanks again,

Look into a Da Vinci 2K and or a digital intermediate. Your producer may not want to pay for the extra post costs, but it’s well worth it; plus, with finished file, you’ll be ready for a film out.

That would be ideal. I’ll have to wait to see how much they shot, to see if it’s reasonable to go to bat for that pricewise.
