DvcPro HD – again
Hello,
I’ve been reading this forum for years, and love it – thanks for such a great community.
I’ve always found the info I needed just searching, but now I’d like some help: I need to edit some DVCPRO HD mov files – that’s quite unusual for me. My Vegas Pro 9e 64 bit runs in a Phenom II x4, 4GB RAM, Win7. So my only option is the Raylight Decoder (I know it’s just $45, but anyway, I don’t intend to use it again)? There’s simply no way to convert it on a PC without Raylight? Should I take the files to convert it in a friend’s mac? If so, what’s the best format to convert to?

From what I understand, it’s not an Apple vs. PC, but a Panasonic vs. Sony thing, why Vegas can’t read that codec. I would have your friend convert them to Photo JPEG. I think the video looks really good and keeps the file size manageable. But if you want uncompressed you will probably have to go with Animation or None and have very large files. Hope that helps.

Thanks, James. I realize it’s a Panasonic x Sony thing, but it seems to have become something bigger – one can’t (AFAIK) simply play a dvcprohd file on a PC. And Apple must have made some kind of business with Panasonic, since final cut is able to edit it – if I’m not misunderstanding everything, I think I’ve read John explaining it.

We use Avid on pc’s at my work and are able to use DVCProHD. Also I have Adobe Premier Pro on pc at home and I’m pretty sure it handles that codec ok so that’s why I think it’s just them bickering. Good luck converting! 🙂
