We are working in a complicated project and the sequence or better the project settings are set at 720p 59.94 DVCPRO HD and we have two layers of video. we will will need to output the movie in HDCAM tape:
1-is it possible to output direct from FCP to HDCAM deck ? or do we need to cross convert first.
2-we are using Kona LHe, should we rent a Kona 2 or 3 card to do real time cross conversion ? or is it any way to do it from LHe ?
3- and the deck should it be set at 29,97 or other frame rate ?

    All the best,

    Well, here’s what we did:

    https://lfhd.blogspot.com/2006/10/kona-3.html

    and

    https://www.aja.com/html/news_historyChannel.html

You need an HD card…specifically the Kona 3. It is the only one that will convert 720p to 1080p on the fly. The Kona LHe will not do this unless you copy and paste the 720p footage into a 1080p timeline and render.

As for #3…what is your required deliverable? Just so you know, 1080p 23.98 is the best master you can get. You can convert to any other format from that master.

    Thank you for the help.

I’ll know better on the delivery format later on as well. the surprise was that we were working on 720p all this time expecting to be delivered in the same format DVCPRO HD and in the end the client told us they need a HDCAM master.
just to be more precise I think LHe is a HD card. Am I wrong on this?

also in the next message I added the question number four:

4-also there will be a 5.1 surround sound encoded tracks, I think with Dolby codex, the audio mixer is going to bring those to us. is any special setting to tweak?

yes it is, but it cannot perform the 720-1080i cross conversion.

If you want surround sound on the tape, I think you have to have the audio guys lay it down. Talk to them and see. My deliverable require a Stereo mix on 1 & 2 (not surround), and M&E on 3 & 4.

Yeah…when we started we shot and edited 720p because our deliverable was 720p. Then specs were changed on us midway thru the edit, but AJA came thru when we needed to output.

    Kona 3.

I don’t think they’re ready to do that. they always have sent the files to be laid back from FCP. and I’m not sure if the budged will allow to rent the deck for the audio guys too and all those tech/compatibility issues that will come in their department.

I guess it should be an way for that. maybe I’ll need to ask Kona tech support

    best,
