I’m looking to shoot a show in 24p using the Panasonic HPX900. Cut in FCP using the AJA Kona 3 and deliver a 1080i 59.94 HDCAM Master.

-At this point im still unclear as to work in a 59.94 sequence in 23.98?

-If I do work in 23.98, when laying off to tape, my timecode will certainly be screwey,if I work in 59.94 my 23.98 footage with duplicate frames removed doesn’t work.

-Should I capture in 23.98, with the pulldown happening on capture, then figure out a way to get it to 59.94 master?

-Should I capture in 59.94 (leaving the duplicate frames in there and pull them out somewhere along the way before dumping to tape)?

I know it is possible to shoot and cut 24p and deliver in 59.94. I just need a little help figuring it al out.

23.98 will be fine, as that is what you are shooting. The Kona 3 will add pulldown when it outputs.

[tylerg] “If I do work in 23.98, when laying off to tape, my timecode will certainly be screwey,if I work in 59.94 my 23.98 footage with duplicate frames removed doesn’t work.”

Not really, it will make the code 60 frames, and it will add pulldown to the footage so yes, frames will be duplicated, but it will do it in a way so that it all looks and works fine. If you shoot 24p at 23.98, work with the footage in that format. Don’t try to edit it 59.94 or you will have problems….need to render EVERY shot.

[tylerg] “Should I capture in 23.98, with the pulldown happening on capture, then figure out a way to get it to 59.94 master?”

Yes…no figuring needed. The Kona 3 will do it for you. BUT…why not shoot a test and see what it will look like. Test the workflow you intend on using and see if it works. That is the best way to go. Even though I was told something would work, I still tested to make sure. Had to see it for myself.

[tylerg] “Should I capture in 59.94 (leaving the duplicate frames in there and pull them out somewhere along the way before dumping to tape)?”

    No…no need. Reasons listed above.

Thanks so much for your help. I think part of my problem is doing too many tests and not really knowing exactly what it is I am looking for.

That settles that- is there an issue with 23.98 (seems to be non-drop) the drop frame I need to deliver in? Will this throw me off?

You just need to figure out what NDF 23.98 would time out to in Drop Frame. I did this:

But I didn’t have to output in the same format as you…I was able to go 23.98 to 23.98. Not sure if this will work for 23.98 to 59.94. Thus the need to test…
