DVCPRO HD 60fps at all times?
Hello all,
This is the story so far.
There was a shoot with a VariCam, I requested 30fps,
I received the tapes and imported the footage and
ended up with 60fps. I have read on the Panasonic
site that the VariCam, when in 30p mode will record each
frame twice:“For example, if the camera operates at 30-fps, each new frame is recorded twice to ensure 60-fps on tape.”
however, my footage is a full 60fps.
Since I have little experience with the work flow, I am
simply wondering what the process is.Do you always get a full 60fps and pull out of that stream
the frame rate you want? eg: going to 30p would mean pulling out every other frame.the footage is a green screen shot and going to a post house
for 3D integration, the final format will be web.As I am sure you can see I am a bit confused and would appreciate a push in the correct direction.

First off, why would you request 30fps? If you’re looking to retain that “filmic” look, then that’s ok, but if you’re looking for full motion video, then you want 60fps. Just curious why you chose the off-frame rate.
The cameras and decks always record at a full 60fps, but if the camera was properly set up for 30fps, then you can use the Frame Rate converter to extract the 30p material. It’s an easy tool to use and you’ll end up with 720p/30 material.
You can also set up FCP to capture at 720p/30 and it will extract the frames on the way in.

We were not going for a film look, the project will live on the web at 15fps, 30fps is a good starting point to get down to 15fps.b.
I understand that the DVCPRO HD VTR records at a fixed 60fps (give that DVCPRO HD is not a variable bit rate format)My question is if you want 30fps or 24fps for that matter, does a VariCam record 60fps of action at all times?
i.e.: you can go frame by frame and each one changes
then in FCP use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter to extract 30fps?or
does it take a 30fps stream and put it into a 60fps container by adding duplicate frames, as I sad before, this is what the Panasonic site suggests, however; this is my first run with the thing, so I am not sure if I brought the tapes in at the wrong FPS or if it was in fact shot at the wrong FPS.

then in FCP use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter to extract 30fps?”Yes, the Varicam, the HVX900 and all Panasonic VTR’s record at a constant 60fps (59.94). You use the DVCPro HD to extract the 30fps from the footage after you bring it in.
OR you set up for DVCPro HD 720/30 capture and let FCP extract it on the way in.
