  • DVCPro 720p captures to 640×480? weird problem…

Posted by Roy Pearson on July 10, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I’m trying to capture a DVCPro tape from a rented HD1400 deck via firewire, but the 720p clips are showing up as 640×480 in FCP!

I’m on FCP 7.0.3 and I’ve tried several computers (mac pros and laptops).

If I capture just just a small section it works fine and the clips come in 960×720, but if I capture a longer portion it goes to 640×480. Of course I’m using the correct FCP presets and device control, and I’ve gone through the deck menu settings to force 720p mode. help!

    Hi,

And you can confirm that it is DVCPRO HD? If it is then 640X480 is wrong, and there is something in your project setup that is leading it astray.

Confirm what you have on the tape as it could be DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 or DVCPRO HD. The Machine should be able to tell you. But barring that, what camera did they use to shoot it? That too could help track down the mystery.

DVCPro HD can’t be recorded on tape

WHAT? That is not true. I have shot many hours DVCPRO HD on Tape.

    Roy,

    Try trashing prefs.
    Rebooting.
Choosing an easy setup for 720p.

Double check the deck menu, that the FW is outputting 720p.

Seems like the problem was that I captured to a network drive. I tried capturing instead to a local drive (via FW800) and it worked perfect.

Still weird because my network speeds are plenty fast (90 MB/s over gigabit, no dropped frames), I guess FCP just doesn’t like the ethernet protocol for capturing this format.

Anyway I will test this more tomorrow when I get more footage in. Oh and the tapes are def DVCPRO HD, shot on a Panny 900. thanks guys!
