DVCPro 1200A edit to tape ?
Posted by Bob on December 23, 2005 at 5:20 pmWe just got a 1200A and we’re trying to edit to tape via SDI and we have machine control via rs 422, device control set to pana-59.94 ? in Kona 2 settings, we have machine control but when we go to execute it doesn’t respond. I searched the forum and reviewed alot about DF an NDF. Our timeline is DVCpro 1080i 29.97, DF timecode, the deck is set to DF and of course 1080i. Any help would be greatly appreciated and an early Christmas present
Thanks, Happy Holidays !

December 23, 2005 at 5:44 pmIf the insert options are graded out in FCP that is due to the fact that the 1200A will not allow editing back to tape in this mode. Any other graded out modes in edit to tape would indicate those features are disabled with the 1200A also.
Only the higher end dvcpro studio vtr’s have full editing mode capabilities. For what I recall you can only edit to tape using firewire not the SDI input when using the 1200A.
DF versus Non Drop have nothing to do with the vtr lack of response. These items only refer to the specific timecode mode used in the sequence or camera masters.
Drop frame will equal one hour of real clock time which is why broadcasters use this timecode standard whereas non drop timecode will be approximately 3 seconds 8 frames longer than one hour of real clock time.
Drop frame drops one frame at the top of every minute except for the zero and every tenth minute there after to sync up to one hour of real clock time which is why it is termed Drop Frame.

December 23, 2005 at 5:54 pmThanks Tony, I do have the firewire and the sdi option, I wonder if I can get the video to go SDI (better quality?) and the timecode Firewire. I know the 1200A cannot insert edit, we’re just trying to get the time code to start at 58:30 so our program comes up at 1 hr. TC., Is there a way get timeline timecode out my Kona 2 SDI ?
thanks again

it is not an issue with insert editing you have settings that are incompatible.
Check to see that you are using the Kona 2 easy setup preset for 1080i29.97
Check to see that FCP is set to use the same settings for video playback.
Check to make sure the deck is in remote.
Check to make sure the deck is set to record 1080 via SDI at what ever compression you captured at
Check to make sure the Kona card is set to playback the same. ( DVCPROHD/ 8bit / 10bit/)lastly check to make sure the SDI out from the K2 is in the correct port on the deck, and your Kona control panel is set correctly for your content.

FCP does not support TC over SDI. the kona board does.
if you are working in the DVCPROHD compressed codec there will be no difference with the lay back to tape between FW and SDI.

I own a 1200A and here’s the real situation, which Panasonic is not even officially aware of, but that those that actually own this deck will atest to.
To use “Edit-to-Tape” to do an assemble edit via HD-SDI in FCP
1)Pre-Black you’re tape with timecode using the 1200A’s TC geerator
2) set the 1200A to HD-SDI input (600-01 on the deck’s menu)
3) in the Edit To Tape window go to the Device Settings Tab
4) under Device Control select Firewire (*)
5) under Capture/Input select the HD codec you’re usingAnd then you can assemble edit at a specific spot on the tape. You cannot do an insert edit with the 1200A under any circumstances.
(*) a caveat here is that you will find that the standard “Firewire” device control can be off by as much as 1 second. By using trial and error you can make your own customized Firewire device control that is accurate for me to +/- 2 Frames.
