  • DVCAM deck auto recording at 44.1KH when sequence at 48

I just love DV tapes, always getting surprised! I am outputting from a Final Cut Pro sequence set at 48 k to a Sony DVCAM deck (DSR30) usint a Sony DV Cam tape. When it records, the deck auto selects 44.1 as my audio data rate. The deck is supposed to record to whatever the standard of te tape is…I know DVCAM tapes can record at 44.1. But, shouldn’t it record 48 k when my sequence is that? Also, when I put a regualr DV tape in, it records to 48k automatically. Anyone know about a menu setting I might be missing here?

On our Sony decks, the audio can be changed in the Menu to 32, 44 or 48. I’m thinking you might have that set to 44.

Thanks for quick reply Walter. I only see 48 and 32. And in the manual it says “The VCR automatically records in the same audio recording mode as the source tape”. I have the deck set to 16 bit–still get 44 on that.

This is the first time in my life that I hear about DVCam recording 44.1 Khz.
I haven’t see that in any device and I haven’t found no reference about in any SONY document.
    Only 32 and 48.

I hear you my brother! That’s the speech I gave the engineer who was looking at my tape at
the studio I delivered it to. So I went home and did a test. Sure enough, I output to the DVCAM tape with no errors from a 48k sequence. When I re-digitized that same tape into the same FCP project I got an error, after digitizing that said tape sample rate different than project. And the deck said the audio data on the new record was 44.
My new theory is I have a deck has a bad chip or my tape stock is old. I’m gonna try a different type of DVCAM tape-the newer ones that are HD. I’ll post results if that works–in case someone else runs into same problem. Thanks for answering anyway!

    I wouldn’t suspect a tape issue.

Tape has nothing to do with sample rates.

The weird thing is that you get 44.1.
I mean, if there is any malfunction would be possible that you get a random data-rate, but is curious that, although the data-rate is wrong, you get a standard one. The DVCam processor should know nothing about 44.1 Khz.
