How do I bring a DVC Pro HD clip into a FCP 720×486 project to take advantage of the larger format area. I want to be able to pan and scan or go to close-up shots using the extra HD size.

FCP seems to reduce the size of the HD on import even though the clip info reads 960×720. Do I have to take the footage into After Effects and render out “shots” for the standard def project?

When dropping an HD clip into a SD timeline, FCP will scale it down and letterbox it. You can then double click on the clip in the timeline, load into the viewer, and scale it up and animate as you wish including keyframing moves. Does this make sense?

It seems that the clip is not really full resolution. In the basic motion tab when I increase the scale to 100% it is only as tall as the standard 486 frame. 100% should make the clip larger than the frame, right?
Also what would the calculation be to get pixels up to a 1:1 ratio. That is, not blown up to distortion but as big as possible at full resolution.

    Frank,

I’m not certain why blowing-up your HD source to 100% in the Motion tab doesn’t make your video larger than the 720×486 frame size, it certainly does here. Try checking in the “distort tab” to make certain distort is set to zero.
