  • DVC-PRO 50 in FCP Capture card or not?

    Hello
I have a question about a shoot I’m preparing that will be edited in FCP.
I’m shooting with a Panasonic SDX-900 camera. This camera is DVCPRO 50, and apparently can record in 12bit.

I’m wondering what is the best way to input the footage in my computer. If I go the firewire way, will I maintain the 12bit?
If I go via a decklink card, uncompressed, it will be 10 bit won’t it?

I’m mostly concerned because this is a greenscreen only shoot, and I need to preserve a maximum resolution all the way.
    Thanks
    Alex

For greenscreen you’re going to have fun either way with a compressed format. You better have plenty of light on the screen, plenty of separation of your talent from the screen and hopefully not a lot of movement in the frame.

Here we work with DVCPro HD and I simply work with Firewire and the DVCPro HD codec through the entire process, even for greenscreen work. I don’t see a difference between capturing as uncompressed HD and DVCPro HD when working with greenscreen.

Compare the two and post back. You’ll be fine if you light it right, and either way should work

    Alex,

Someone how you got the technical spec of dvcpro 50 wrong. The recorder does not record in 12 bit it is only capable of 8 bits.

The 12 bit you are referring to is the camera head processing not the vtr. So regardless of how you capture the original footage it will always be 8 bit.

However if you work in a 10 bit uncompressed sequence you will have an advantage when dealing with color correction.

Thanks to all for the replies.

The part that got me scratching my head was the 12bit. I didn’t see how this was possible.
So I guess I’ll be comparing the two captures and see if there is any difference when I pull my key….

    Thanks again

I have another question. I just tested importing footage into FCP from the AJ-SD930 deck. In FCP it all looks good, and shows up as a 720×576 widescreen shot.
However when I bring into AE, I get a very different result that what I get in FCP. First of all the image looks squashed vertically, even though the PAR is 16/9, and second it looks a bit crunchy.
    What could be causing this?
Does FCP have some kind of way to read this footage that AE doesen’t?

    Thanks
    Alex
