DVAVI or ProRes?

You want DV AVI. This is a native format for the PC. ProRes is for a Mac (although it can be read on a PC it’s best to avoid it if you can unless you have a Mac).

It would be if Vegas could read it. You can certainly try it. But Vegas is expecting DV in a native AVI container and not in a QuickTime MOV container. It may work, but it might not.

I would try a small sample and see if it works but if you are paying for someone to do this and they are going to charge you twice for two files, DV AVI will work the first time, every time. 😉

i guess it also depends on his goals.

if its strictly compatibility with Vegas then DV
if preservation of quality is a consideration then Prores

I dont have a ton of experience using prores in Vegas but most(if not all) mov files I have tried to use in Vegas have worked

Actually now that I think about it, ProRes will work fine. I was thinking that they would put DV in a QuickTime container. I’ve seen people capture HDV to QuickTime on a Mac and Vegas couldn’t read it but since it’s ProRes, it should edit fine in Vegas.

I stand corrected… ProRes should work. 😉
