  • DV transfer – 2 questions please

Posted by Jim Cutler on January 23, 2006 at 9:30 pm

A “prepping for HD question”, and a “miniDV colorspace question” please:

    1) MiniDV footage that I’m bringing into FinalCut for family is then going to DVD. But with HD DVDs coming I guess I should ALSO output the video in HD waiting for whatever format emerges. The important question is, will it look bad in HD since it originally came from miniDV tape?

My second question is a totally different subject:

    2) When tansferring VHS to miniDV, the resulting color looks a little washed out (compared to the original VHS). Is this normal because of different colorspaces bewtween the formats? Am I doing something wrong with an S-Video transfer from VHS, or is it normal to always color correct inside of FCP when going to miniDV? (This is NOT a broadcast project, it’s for family.)

    1) Yes, it will look bad. DV is the lowest form of “broadcast acceptable” formats out there. It is compressed 5:1 and has a 4:1:1 colorspace (as opposed to uncompressed having 4:2:2). It won’t look good.

Thank you Shane. It’s too bad all the DV homevid we’ve shot won’t be viewable on an HDTV. I work in major-market television (on talent end) and believe it or not I don’t own one yet. So sorry about the newbie question. Maybe HDTV’s will have a lower res display for standard DVDs. Once I buy one I’ll know the answers to all these baby questions. Thanks for your time. 🙂

It will be viewable, it just won’t look that good. it will look a bit blurry and will have artifacting around the edges.

This is what happens when you take 720×480 5:1 compressed video and blow it up to 1280×720 or 1920×1080.

Take a still image and zoom in 200% to get an idea.

I got that, thanks. IS there anything you can do to keep miniDV footage viewable into the future? Is there a FCP output that while isn’t highest def, would be the best shot at letting family members watch old DV family movies in the next few years?

Believe it or not, DV/SD will be around for a long time and will be viewable for many years to come. Just keep your original MiniDV tapes. They will playback on any consumer camcorder. You will be able to connect it to ANY HD or SD Television now and in the future.

Cool. Thanks Steven. I was thinking that might be the case. Thanks for responding.

It should look as it does now. Unless you have a cruddy earlier HDTV set. Your DV format is essentially the same (actually much higher rez) as what is coming over your TV now. And if you have digital cable you’re looking at an EXTREMELY highly compressed mpeg2 format for SD. People are watching that every day on their HD sets. There’s really not all that much to look at in HD just yet. The SD or DV should look just the same as ever, and the HDTV looks awesome.
