DV transcode on Ingest?
This might be a dumb question, but is it possible or would it be worth it to Transcode DV anamorphic tape on ingest to ProRes 422? Or would you transcode after ingest using Compressor?
I’ve been recording things with our HVX 200 in SD at 480 30p. I’ve always digitize with the DV anamorphic Easy Set up and once ingested, changed the Field Dominance from Lower (Even) to None to get the 30p material.
Nothing is for broadcast. And mainly for web and DVD use, hence the want for Progressive material. Any thoughts?
Oh, the main I reason I thought of transcoding to ProRes was for Color Correction and a little compositing work.

Thanks Dave. I wasn’t sure about that one. Question though in your method. Wouldn’t it be better to keep the DV timeline, build graphics and animations (w/ Motion), export those to ProRes 4×4 or Animation (need the alpha channel) and drop in DV timeline. Then rather than change the codec settings in the timeline, export a quicktime movie and transcode on export to ProRes? With the graphics already being in ProRes 4×4 or Animation codec, they would still look good. Does that sound right?
Also, I do use P2 and DVC Pro50 sometimes. But a lot of time we don’t have time for P2 offload and need to keep shooting. which I why I choose tape. I much rather shoot P2 720p or even SD like you said, but sometimes we simply don’t have the time. This is mainly man-on-the-street style stuff and event shooting. Thanks

Hi Matt,
You only get improvement when capturing through a video card.
The 420/411 to 422 conversion is better done in hardware because the Chroma filtering done by the card.
Software transcoding will yields the same results whenever you transcode on ingest or in the moment of rendering the time-line. However there is a way to improve the DV to Prores conversion by using some Chroma filter like those of Nattress.

ah. learn something new everyday. wasn’t aware of that. I thought it would re-render to the new codec on export. Thanks for clearing that up. I’ll use that method. appreciate the help.
