An associate of mine is working on a documentary project on his own FCP system, which is sans capture card. The footage comes from DV via firewire. He needs to ultimately deliver a DigiBeta master.

His idea is to do the online/color-correction on his own system and then output a DV master, which he would then have dubbed to DigiBeta to create his master. He feels that he can save money in the post-production process by not reconforming the project someplace else.

My thought here is that he will be sacrificing quality by color correcting in DV color space, and by not reconforming at true uncompressed. My question is: how much of this quality sacrifice is simply theoretical, and how much is real? I personally would advocate conforming and color correcting in true uncompressed – but, then again, I’m not the one paying for the project.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Chris

Really, from a video standpoint, the color correction will look pretty good on the DV codec. It’s any graphics, such as lower thirds, etc… that will fall apart in DV. Lots of artifacts and compression will be seen on those.

If he’s delivering to Broadcast, that may be an issue. If it’s just a corporate job, then it may not matter.

i would do everything dv, and then get it converted to digibeta at a transfer house.

if its a documentary, and it’s good, then, when people with money see it, want to buy it and put it on television, then THEY can pay to have it onlined.

why pay for it, when someone else with more money can do it for you?
