  • DV to DigiBeta Master- have to scale up?

Can anyone chime in on a very big debate we have going at work here…
We have shot a show on DVX100 which means our media is at 720×480 but we need to master onto DigiBeta tapes which are 720×486. The Network Guidelines we have received demand that we deliver our media at 720×486. I can’t accept that everyone who shoots on DV must then upscale their sequences to 720×486 before laying back to DigiBeta, but that is what we are being asked to do. This involves taking our 720×480 media into a 720×486 sequence and rendering every time we want to master.
I say, can’t we just lay back directly out of FCP to DigiBeta without scaling up? How do we account for the 6 media line difference b/w 486 and 480?
Thank you VERY much for any insight.

Don’t scale the video. This is bad for quality. You put 2 black lines at the top and 4 black lines at the bottom. An SDI card will do this automatically on playout of 720×480 media.

You get yourself a video card like the Kona series and play your DV directly out to DigiBeta. The K2 positions your video correctly for video playout so you don’t have an reverse interlacing issues.

I’ve output DV timelines to Beta via an Aja Io without having to scale the video. If you select the right preset when you’re laying off to tape, it should just work.

We are using a Black Magic card to output, so we can go straight to tape is what I’m hearing… like I thought! Thank you very much for your input. It helps quite a lot.
