A bit of workflow situation here. I cut a show in DV at home on FCP 5.1.2 original sources was Beta SP. I need to get this show into a 720×486 timeline so I can add a closed caption file to it which only seems to work in the 720×486 setting. I will then output to digibeta via Kona 3 at my day job. Due to time and budget, I can’t recapture the show via uncompressed and work is only running FCP 5.1 so my home project isn’t compatible with work. I tried XML export/import to no avail. Any thoughts on what workflow would give me the best quality on the digibeta master?

    Thanks!

Copy and paste your sequence into an 8-bit uncompressed timeline and render. Then add the file and output. The 8-bit uncompressed timeline will be 720×486.

Thanks for the quick reply Shane. Since I’m stuck to doing this at home, I should just bring a final uncompressed 8-bit quicktime to work and ouput to digibeta from here then? With this workflow I shouldn’t see any(much) deterioration of video quality I assume?

You will have to output this on a system with a capture card. And choose the 8-bit codec that that card uses.

The best way to do this would be to export a Quicktime movie (ref movie is fine), reimport that, drop THAT into an 8-bit uncompressed timeline and then render. You will not see any deterioration in quality, nor will you see any gain in quality. Once you capture at DV resolution, that is the best you can get.
