    Hey everyone,

I think I have a pretty good idea of how I would like to move forward, but I’d like to get some opinions.

I have a 4:3 480i DV short doc that I’d like to reconform to HD for color/gfx/delivery. We would like to be able to deliver a 720p 16:9 master for both the resolution bump we’ll get for gfx and color as well as the ability to crop and reframe the image. We are aware of the resolution hit that we’ll get blowing up what will essentially be a 720×360 image to 720p.

I have a Kona LHi and a dv deck w/ SDI out. I’m thinking I’ll recapture to 1080p29.97 pillar boxed, drop the footage in a 720p timeline in FCP to reframe to 16:9 and finish out with color and gfx.

Please tell me what is wrong with this. I’m also curious if the LHi can even handle a 480i to 1080p frame rate conversion. Also, would a product like Red Giant Intant HD be more suitable? I’m aware that hardware conversion is supposed to give the best results, but perhaps that isn’t the case in this situation. Would a Teranex box be more appropriate?

    Thanks for your time.

Yes and yes some more if you can afford it.
Not sure why you would want to go to from DV to 1080 and then back down to 720 though. If your final delivery is 720 then don’t worry about scaling up to 1080, it’s pointless.

Thanks for the response. To address your question,

“We would like to be able to deliver a 720p 16:9 master for both the resolution bump we’ll get for gfx and color as well as the ability to crop and reframe the image.”

Capture as a pillar boxed 1080 frame and then finish at 720 so that we have some latitude to reframe the image.

As I understand it, the LHi is capable of zooming into 4:3 footage to to conform it to 16:9, but I’m thinking that it’s kind of a dumb, one time process, meaning that it simply lops off the top and bottom and reframes the same across all clips w/o the ability to slide the footage up and down to customize the reframing, plus we will be locked into whatever framing we do at recapture instead of having some flexibility should we choose to tweak anything.

Blowing up a 4×3 DV image to 720p does the opposite of a “resolution bump”. It degrades your footage and there’s really no way around it. 1080 would be even worse.

If you shot 1080p and then worked at 720 or even SD, then you could reframe, but you are talking about the opposite.
