In Final Cut Pro I have have done a Capture Now and caught a 1 hour clip knowing that most of it is going to be used.

I have selected the clip and gone to Mark/DV Start/Stop Detect. It has then found all the start/stop points from the recording stage and listed a bunch of pink segments as a drop down list under the original clip.

Question, do I have to select all these pink segments and make them subclips (I think I had to do this in FCP3) or can I just select the segments and drag them to the timeline?

Also, any segments that are out-takes, can I just delete them so I can get organized?

Finally, how about renaming segments, is this okay too?

I just want to be sure this is okay editing before I start spending days on it only to find out it won’t output to tape or something equally bad.

Take all your markers and drag them into your timeline. Create a new bin or bins and drag the clips back to the bin/s. This creates subclips. If you subclip, each clip is created seperately. You can rename the subclips without harm. As far as organization, that is your best route to go.

If you just drag each of the markers into your timeline, each clip is still the ENTIRE clip you captured. If you rename the markers (Segment 1,2, 3, etc…, you are changing the entire clip. That is not good. All of your editing must be done on the timeline. If you do set edit points in the viewer window, those clips must go directly to the timeline. If you select another clip without adding your previous clip to the timeline, you will lose your in/out points.

    Good luck.

Slightly confused. What I’m doing is double clicking on a pink segment to put it in the viewer, I’m marking in/out points then dragging it to the timeline. Then I rename it from say Segment 1 to Car Shot for example, and any segments I don’t use i.e. Segment 12, Segment 13 I highlight them and hit delete, is this all okay?
